The player can move while armed and automatically lock on to enemies by depressing the aim button. Similarly to Resident Evil, players must draw their weapon with one button and fire it with a different one. Each room entrance has two doors with a vacuum system between them this ensures that a flooded room will not leak outside the room. If the player is not near an AS or lacks oxygen grenades, they can use a regulator to breathe in low oxygen areas and in flooded areas. Oxygen grenades can be used to replenish low oxygen level rooms or hallways. Low oxygen level rooms will appear in red on the player’s map. If the player is not using the oxygen level indicator, a red emergency light will indicate a low oxygen level. When the player has a regulator, an AS allows him to refill it. In some areas, oxygen can be replenished (an unlimited number of times) by finding yellow oxygen boxes known as Air Systems (AS). Overuse of firearms depletes the oxygen more quickly. Therefore, one necessity for survival is to refill low oxygenated areas and thus avoid asphyxiation. The Big Table’s oxygen supply is dwindling. The game fully utilises the Saturn’s six-button controller, allowing players to have instant access to a map screen as well as real-time use of grenades and health items, which may be used without resorting to the inventory screen. Once armed, players can move using the D-pad and can run while aiming a firearm. Players can turn on or off certain on-screen indicators such as an oxygen counter, health meter and bullet count. Players move John Mayor through the pre-rendered rooms of The Big Table which are shown from fixed camera angles using a permanent 3D control scheme. The music was composed by Kenji Kawai, and the creatures and characters were designed by illustrator Yasushi Nirasawa. The game offers unique gameplay features such as buttons that allow the player to use items in real-time, aiming while moving, and falling oxygen levels. It was the last Saturn game released in Europe. So… watch some clips on Youtube? It’s a freaking trip.Deep Fear ( ディープフィアー, Dīpu Fiā) is a 1998 survival horror video game developed by Sega AM7 and System Sacom for the Sega Saturn. The most memorable thing here by far is the voice acting.

But it’s not a fun game to play, and it’s definitely not scary. And it’s nice that you can aim and fire while you walk and run.

But it was an interesting attempt? It’s nice that you can assign items to specific buttons to use immediately. I think the game was made a bit too soon, and would have fared much better on the Dreamcast. I didn’t really enjoy playing this game, I’ll go ahead and be honest. Then again, I think I feared the loading times more. So that’s kind of a way to build tension? The fear of that big number in the top right corner reaching zero. Yeah, the biggest enemy in the game is asphyxiation. You are a combat force dude who has to deal with the chaos of a The Last of Us scenario in an underwater research facility. The enemies (which admittedly have some interesting designs… basically, think of that kid who sat next to you in high school, who was a pretty decent artist and would doodle weird parasite monster people in the margins of his notebook–those became the creatures in Deep Fear) are easy to take down, but because you are under water you have to worry about the amount of oxygen in every room you go into. It’s all so wonderfully terrifying if you stop to think about it. And the graphics are just barely bad enough that nobody moves in a way that feels natural at all, and yet the game developers were clearly attempting to make cutscenes that have characters interacting the way they would in a (really, really bad) movie. The graphics are just barely good enough to make all the characters look like wax dolls, throwing us smack-dab in Act 2 of the Uncanny Valley Zone. The sound effects and enemy moans are all really muffled and bad quality. I want to die.ĭeep Fear is one of the most surreal games you will never play. Okay, you ready for me to drop a bombshell? Deep Fear is worse. Think of the worst voice acting you have ever heard in a video game. Let’s start with the obvious: the voice acting. It is not an easy matter, putting into words what it feels like to play this game. But if you’re willing to pretend you’re back in the 90’s, maybe there’s an interesting experience to be had here? This is the Saturn’s attempt at the survival horror genre, and suffice to say it hasn’t aged well. Not a difficult game to play as an import title though, as the spoken dialogue is all in English and it’s not so hard to work out the menus. This game was released for the Saturn in Japan and in Europe (where it was the final Saturn title), but never in the States. Deep Fear is definitely a product of its time.
